It's a pleasure to introduce this guest post from my long-time friend and talented designer, Lucy Winter. Lucy and I studied Fashion Design together many moons ago, and a few interesting twists of fate have meant that we now both run jewellery businesses. Lucy co-runs her family business, All That Glitters, which boasts boutiques in the historic Brighton Lanes, Chichester, Horsham as well as their online store.
As a fashion designer for the high street, it was my job to filter through the trends and turn the catwalk looks (often completely ridiculous) into something you might choose to wear out of an evening, to work or even on holiday. As I now turn my hand to accessories, I realise that this is still the case. I assume the average woman doesn’t feel comfortable in head to toe leopard print, or wearing earrings that literally graze your belly button. So here are my hints and tips as to how to work the latest trends to suit your style.
The leather jacket is making a strong comeback, filtering down from the vamp catwalks of YSL. Leather or faux leather jackets are a wardrobe staple that can add instant edge to a summer dress if you get caught short in our unpredictable weather. Saint Laurent teamed theirs with studded ear cuffs and long silken tassel earrings with thick gold cuffs, yes, sometimes all at once. This look might be a bit full on for us mere mortals but if you keep your lines sleek and clean then don’t be afraid to go bold with those bangles!
Now florals aren’t for everyone, myself included, but they are unavoidable this Summer. From cutesy vintage prints to big, bright and beautiful head to toe florals, they are everywhere. It seems that the designers weren’t stopping at the the flowers when looking outdoors for inspiration. Take a note from Giambattista Valli and accessorize with leaves instead if you’re not quite ready for flower power takeover.

This is an easy trend to incorporate into your look, especially if you are travelling to sunnier shores. Everyone loves to show off a tan and the sugar coated colour pallet is ideal for this. Simple silhouettes and minimal fuss are the way to achieve this look. Be as subtle as coloured stones in your jewellery, or as bold as one of the popular power suits that are sweeping the high street (this one by Reiss is great if you’re looking).
Filtering through from Autumn/Winter the animal print trend is still going strong. Everything from cow prints to leopard's spots are all over the catwalk. Update for this season by clashing your prints. Mix florals with your animal print of choice for a bold statement look, like this Asos dress. Or keep it simple and invest in some classic leopard print boots such as these beauties by Fabrizio Viti.
Saving the best for last, this is my favourite summer trend. Who doesn’t love a big chandelier earring with a maxi dress on a summer evening? This season it is all about texture and contrasting materials. Anything goes, from Chanel’s oversized perspex raindrop earrings to shells & tassells. Make your earrings asymmetrical and wear one long earring and something small like an ear climber on the other ear.
The main message this season is to have fun. All your favourite pieces and summer staples can easily be reworked to keep you on trend this Summer (long may it last!).
